It’s time to toast the end of another year. It’s a great time to look back at the people and moments that moved us this year. We’ve shared the stories of so many amazing patients and caregivers but today I wanted to celebrate some very special kids in our community that supported Nationwide Children’s this year.

Six- year-old Michael stopped by our offices in October to give us almost $300 that he raised from his birthday party. Michael has a very superior knowledge of the United States Presidents, and had a president-themed birthday party. All of his friends came dressed as their favorite president or first lady. Instead of gifts, he asked for money for our patients. He said that presidents do nice things for others, and he wanted to, as well.

Zachary Kroll, celebrated his final chemotherapy treatment by donating a wagon to the hospital.

Hamilton Township High School rallied around one of their students who was recently diagnosed with cancer to raise $844 in just a few days.

Jonathan Alder High School girls’ soccer team sold “Kick Cancer” t-shirts and bracelets to raise awareness and $500 for cancer research.

Jacob and Jonah Schottenstein, with their friend Ethan Solomon raised an amazing $92.25 in one afternoon at their neighborhood lemonade stand.

Lakeview Junior High collected hats and $1,000 to aid in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Ty Boggs celebrated his 9th birthday by stopping by to donate all of his birthday presents to our patients.

Logan asked for book donations this fall. He dropped off 10 boxes of brand new books.

These are just a few examples of the generous children in our community. I’ll leave 2012 this: “While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about-”
Angela Schwindt

Spring starts on March 20th (hooray) and it’s time to get inspired! There is no better place to gather home improvement and gardening ideas than the Columbus Dispatch’s massive annual Home and Garden Show taking place now through this Sunday at the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus.
It’s also a great family event and children 12 and under get in free. This Saturday, March 3rd the entire event is dedicated to “Kid’s Day” and is loaded with special hands-on activities and fun.
Additionally, Nationwide Children’s is thrilled to be the event’s beneficiary this year. The Dispatch group is generously donating a portion of proceeds to the hospital and has created a jaw-dropping “wishing fountain” at the event entrance. It’s already brimming with coins and lots of well-wishes.

This Saturday is Jr. Philanthropy Day – Get A “Bunny Bank.” If you come to the Show this weekend please stop by and visit us at the Wishing Fountain. We’re kicking off a special new “bunny bank” project to help children learn about the importance of philanthropy and how great it feels to help others. Each child will receive a Young Philanthropist Kit including a bunny bank and a simple to understand guide that explains philanthropy, tips for getting started and how great it feels to give back. Every penny counts, and I think the bunny banks are the cutest thing ever!

If you can’t make it this Saturday, just email Alyson Doyle in our foundation and we’ll drop your kit(s) in the mail. Bunny banks can be returned at any time to the hospital and we’ll have special recognition for your junior philanthropist. Happy Spring and let me know if your kids like their bunny bank!
